Control system modernisation. When it makes sense and how to prepare
An older machine can run mechanically for years – the weak spot is usually its control system. How to tell it is time to modernise and how to do it without a long outage.

Many machines are mechanically sound even after twenty years in operation. The problem is the control system: parts are no longer made, documentation is missing and the machine cannot be connected to other equipment. Modernising the controls is often cheaper than a new machine and significantly extends its service life.
Signs it is time to act
A typical warning sign is that control system spare parts are only available from specialist dealers or second-hand. Other signals are repeated electronic failures, no way to back up the program, or a machine that cannot be connected to the plant’s production system. The risk also grows when only one person in the company understands the system.
Start by analysing the current state
Before modernising, map out what the machine does: inputs and outputs, safety functions, links to other equipment and operator requirements. A good analysis is the basis for an accurate quote and prevents surprises during commissioning.
Modernisation is a chance to improve
When replacing the controls, you can also fix what has long bothered operators: confusing controls, missing diagnostics or manual steps that can be automated. It is also a good time to check machine safety features against current requirements.
Plan the outage with a buffer
Most of the work can be prepared in advance – the control cabinet, program and HMI. The changeover on the machine then takes only a few days and can be timed for a shutdown. Allow time for fine-tuning and operator training.
We help with analysis, design and delivery of control system modernisation and with integrating the machine into your existing production.
